Adventure-based Life Education (ABLE)

Strong Bodies, Resolute Minds · Exploring Nature · Embracing the Future

HKUGA Primary School has always upheld the philosophy of whole-person education, striving to foster students' healthy physical and mental development, positive values, and capability to face future challenges. To this end, the school implements a whole-school Adventure-based Life Education (ABLE) curriculum for Primary 4 to Primary 6 students. Through experiential learning, students step out of the classroom and into nature. In the process of exploration, challenge, and reflection, they build self-confidence, cultivate perseverance, and put the educational goal of "Strong Bodies, Resolute Minds" into practice.

Designed in a progressive model tailored to the developmental needs of different grade levels, the curriculum integrates wilderness survival experiences, orienteering training, and long-distance hiking challenges. It nurtures students' problem-solving skills, teamwork spirit, and leadership qualities, allowing them to learn in real-world environments and grow through challenges.

Primary 4: Wilderness Survival Experience - Exploration and Discovery

The ABLE curriculum begins with the Primary 4 wilderness survival experience.

Through outdoor exploration and adventure tasks, students learn fundamental wilderness skills and survival knowledge, including orientation, environmental observation, resource utilization, safety awareness, and teamwork. Students step away from their familiar campus environment to observe, judge, and adapt within nature, gradually building independent thinking and problem-solving abilities.

During the activities, students learn the importance of division of labor, communication, and mutual support as they work together to complete tasks. Facing unfamiliar environments and various challenges, they must dare to try, continue exploring, and realize the value of persistence and effort through practice.

By connecting with nature, students not only enhance their environmental awareness but also learn to appreciate nature and respect life, laying a solid foundation for more challenging adventure learning in the future.

Primary 5: Orienteering Training - Challenge and Breakthrough

The Primary 5 curriculum takes orienteering as its learning focus, fostering students' independent learning and problem-solving abilities through a combination of theory and practice.

Students first learn foundational knowledge such as map reading, direction finding, route planning, and orienteering techniques, followed by participation in country park orienteering experiences. In a real-world environment, students must use maps and environmental information to locate designated checkpoints, adjusting their routes and strategies according to actual conditions.

Orienteering tests not only their sense of direction and physical fitness, but also requires calm thinking, effective communication, and joint decision-making. Throughout the process, students frequently face challenges such as route selection, time management, and unexpected situations, thereby cultivating their problem-solving skills, judgment, and teamwork spirit.

From initially feeling unfamiliar with orienteering to gradually mastering skills, building confidence, and actively leading teams to complete tasks, students fully demonstrate an active exploratory attitude and the courage to accept challenges.

Primary 6: P2C Walkathon - Journey to College

A Major Milestone in the ABLE Curriculum

The P2C Walkathon ("Journey to College") is an important culmination of the ABLE curriculum at the primary level and one of the signature traditional events of HKUGA Primary School.

Walking from HKUGA Primary School to HKUGA College, the event symbolizes students completing their primary school learning journey and stepping into a new stage of growth. For students, this is not only a physical challenge but also a profound life education lesson on perseverance, responsibility, and teamwork.

To complete the 16-kilometer walking journey, students must undergo long-term physical training, make thorough preparations, and possess unwavering willpower and a never-give-up spirit. Along the way, teachers and students walk side by side, encouraging one another and striving forward together toward a common goal regardless of the weather.

Every student who successfully reaches the finish line proves their growth through practical action. The smiles at the finish line represent not only the joy of completing a challenge, but also witness the fruits of persistence, hard work, and self-breakthrough.

The Development of the P2C Walkathon

Since its inception, the P2C Walkathon has gradually evolved into a signature event of the HKUGA educational system, winning recognition from students, parents, and the wider community.

  • Inaugural Event: Paving a Tradition - The first event opened a brand-new growth journey for HKUGA students. For the first time, students practiced the core philosophy of the ABLE curriculum through a long-distance hiking challenge, learning perseverance, cooperation, and self-breakthrough along the way. That year, approximately 55% of students met the standard for completing the 16-kilometer distance.

  • Steady Progress: Growth and Development - Following optimization of the event, student participation and physical fitness levels improved significantly. In the second event, nearly 80% of students successfully completed the 16-kilometer challenge, reflecting the long-term effectiveness of the school's promotion of physical training and adventure education. The event further reinforced the concept of team companionship, with teachers and students completing the journey together, allowing students to experience the true meaning of teamwork through mutual support.

  • Reaching New Heights: The Third Milestone - By its third installment, the event offered two challenge levels (8 km and 16 km), enabling students to progressively challenge themselves based on their individual abilities while maintaining 16 kilometers as the ultimate growth goal. Having participated in the ABLE curriculum since Primary 4—experiencing wilderness survival, orienteering, Geopark exploration, and systematic physical training—students underwent over two years of preparation. Ultimately, 85% of students successfully met the standard for the 16-kilometer challenge, setting a record high. This standard is equivalent to the top 20% performance level of 11-year-old students in Hong Kong on a 9-minute endurance run, fully reflecting students' exceptional progress in physical fitness, perseverance, and resilience.

Educational Outcomes

Through three years of systematic adventure-based life education, students achieve remarkable growth in the following areas:

  • Establishing healthy, active lifestyles and exercise habits
  • Enhancing physical fitness levels, cardiopulmonary function, and body endurance
  • Cultivating an indomitable spirit of perseverance and a never-give-up attitude
  • Strengthening problem-solving and independent thinking skills
  • Enhancing communication, coordination, and teamwork abilities
  • Building a sense of responsibility, leadership, and a spirit of service
  • Fostering an attitude of appreciating nature and caring for the environment
  • Increasing confidence and resilience in facing challenges and adversity

Strong Bodies, Resolute Minds - Passing the Torch

The P2C Walkathon is not only a graduation rite of passage for HKUGA Primary School graduates; it is also the culmination of a collaborative effort involving HKUGA Primary School, HKUGA College, the HKU Graduates Association Education Foundation, and the Parent-Teacher Associations of both schools. It fully showcases the cohesion and educational philosophy of our "through-train" school system.

From the nature exploration in Primary 4 and orienteering in Primary 5, to the Journey to College in Primary 6, students build robust physiques and cultivate resolute wills step by step through their learning journey, while learning care and commitment through teamwork.

Measure growth with footsteps, record memories with sweat; elevate resilience and practice the spirit of "Strong Bodies, Resolute Minds." This is the most precious educational achievement of the ABLE curriculum and the vital cornerstone for HKUGA students as they step toward the future.
